Wycoller Shetlands

Local Shows

Trawden Show has been cancelled (March 2001) for this year due to the foot and mouth crisis. Our main fund raising events had already been cancelled and a decision had to be made before significant costs started to be incurred. We look forward to seeing everyone in 2002.

Cheshire County Show has also been cancelled. Royal Lancs is going ahead, but without sheep, goats and cattle.

Trawden Show is always on the 2nd Sunday in August. I am the Rare and Minority breed secretary covering sheep, cattle and pigs - schedules available from me. There are Shetland sheep only classes.

Trawden has sone of the largest sheep entries across all breeds of any one day show in the UK - well worth a visit.

Masham Sheep Fair is held in Masham just north of Ripon in North Yorkshire at the end of September. Rare and minority breeds are shown and sold on the Sunday.

Schedules can be obtained from Mrs S Cunliffe-Lister, Glebe House, Masham, Ripon HG4 4EQ tel: 01765 689300 or 01262 490388 nearer the time.

Why not have a good day out and stock up with Black Sheep ale at the same time.

Sales

The main SSBG sale is on the second Saturday in September, preceded by a show on the Friday. This is the main UK sale of the Rare Breeds Survival Trust and is an essential event for anyone in the UK involved with rare and minority breeds. The sale is held at the Royal Show Ground, Stoneleigh, near Kenilworth, Warwickshire.

The main sale in the north of England was at Borderway Mart, Carlisle at the end of September/early October. This has grown considerably in the last few years and there are a number of commercial farmers keen to buy good shearling ewes on which they can claim HLCA allowances. For pedigree buyers this is a chance to buy sound stock from breeders in the north of England and Scotland often reared on high ground. All shetlands are inspected prior to sale by officials of the Shetland Sheep Breeders Group to ensure animals are as entered, true to type and no obvious defects.

Harrison & Hetherington can be contacted on 01228 590490.

More locally there is a rare breeds sale at Skipton Auction Mart in North Yorkshire. The date is a Saturday in the middle of September and the sale is preceeded by a show. Craven Cattle Marts can be contacted by phone on 01756 792375, fax 01756 700681 or email: admin@skiptonauctionmart.co.uk

Dates for 2001 will be posted as soon as possible.
